Brazil president regrets Chapecoense team plane disaster
President Michel Temer deplored the plane crash today that victimized most of Brazil's Chapecoense football team. “I express my solidarity at this sad time as tragedy befalls dozens of Brazilian families,” Temer said on his Twitter.
The plane carrying the team from the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina crashed in Colombia with 81 people on board in the early hours of Tuesday (Nov. 29). The team were on their way to Medellín, where they were to play the finals of the South American men's football cup against Colombia's Atlético Nacional.
Temer said that the government is providing every means to support the family, and that the Air Force and the Foreign Ministry have already been called to help.
“The government will do all it can to help relieve the suffering of friends and families of national sport and journalism players. #ForçaChape ['Carry on Chape', in a loose translation],” President Temer said.
Colombia police confirmed 76 people aboard the plane were killed in the crash. Among the passengers were players, sports officers, and journalists. The plane was a British Aerospace 146, run by Lamia airline from Bolivia.
