Senate turns to Supreme Court against ouster of Renan Calheiros

The Federal Senate filed an appeal with the Supreme Court (STF) to reverse the ruling of Justice Marco Aurélio, who ousted Senator Renan Calheiros from his post as head of the Brazilian upper house yesterday (Dec. 5). The request was made this morning (6).

In the document, Marco Aurélio, rapporteur in the case that led to Calheiros's removal, is asked to deliberate on the matter. In case the ruling is not overturned, a request for defense may be taken to the floor of the house by STF Chief Justice Cármen Lúcia.

In a breakfast with journalists this morning, Cármen Lúcia said she would give priority to the appeal if it is submitted to her office for a plenary session.
