Brazil announces new justice minister: Osmar Serraglio
A statement issued by the Planalto presidential palace announced that Osmar Serraglio, of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), will be Brazil's new minister for Justice and Public Security.
The appointment was confirmed last night (Feb. 23) by Alexandre Parola, spokesman for the presidency. According to him, President Michel Temer showed “total confidence” in Serraglio's skills to take the reins of the ministry.
“A jurist and a congressman with a long parliamentary history at the Chamber of Deputies, the deputy brings his wide professional experience to the task of carrying on with the agenda of duties under his responsibility,” Perola stated.
Serraglio is taking the place of Alexandre Moraes, who was appointed Supreme Court justice after being named by Temer.
Profile
Osmar Serraglio is in his fifth term as a federal deputy and will represent the PMDB at the lower house as a cabinet member. He is 68-year-old lawyer and a law professor.
At the Chamber of Deputies, Serraglio was chairman of the Commission for Constitution and Justice (CCJ) in 2016 and conducted the procedures that led to the removal of former lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha, also of the PMDB. In the same year, the congressman was one of the figures supporting the party's break from former President Dilma Rousseff's government.
