President Temer said Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi has been talking with the European Union to avoid a suspension on meat imports from BrazilMarcos Corrêa/PR

President Michel Temer expressed optimism about the outcome of Brazil's meat industry crisis at an event on Tuesday evening (March 28) at Brazil's Agricultural Confederation (CNA). “I think [the crisis] is coming to an end,” the president said when asked about it after dinner.

He said Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi has been talking with the European Union to avoid a suspension on meat imports from Brazil.

“Concerns around the European Union remain. Minister Blairo Maggi has just told me he will have further talks this and next week. They will be sending their experts to carry out tests and inspections. But as we can see, many of the countries that were set to embargo [meat imports from Brazil] decided not to do so, and that is testament to the strong health standards of Brazil's meat,” the president said.

The European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, is visiting Brazil and has inquired Brazilian authorities about Operation Weak Flesh, an investigation into alleged wrongdoing in 21 Brazilian meat plants. To respond to the Europena Union's inquiries, Maggi met with Commissioner Andriukaitis yesterday morning (28).
