Cabinet meeting on Temer's one year as presidentAntonio Cruz/ Agência Brasil

During an event marking one year in office, President Michel Temer said his ties with Congress have been instrumental in his job as president, and stressed the key role of the reforms proposed under his administration. The statement was made at the presidential palace today (May 12).

The president said he found the country “with an abyss of millions,” in addition to economic recession, high unemployment rates, inflation, and high interest.

“I have the honor and the joy of leading the way across, and I will do it. It was tense, but the outcome is positive. We already have material results and great reasons to stay confident. Brazil is getting back on the path of growth. Forward is the way to go now. The crossing is safe, and in the second year, we'll have a restructured and efficient country,” the president said.

The president talked about the relations between the executive and the National Congress: “it was necessary to establish the dialog that didn't exist before. The difficulty ruling came actually as a result of this lack of dialog. The ties between executive and legislative were poor. The country had to be pacified.”

Reforms

Regarding the reforms under deliberation in Congress, Temer advocated the approval of the pension and labor overhauls, which will be followed by a tax reform.

While mentioning data showing that companies can already identify a growth in sales “after two years in the red,” Temer reiterated that the labor reform will bring more job openings to the labor market, with no harm to workers' rights. “The lightest word I can think of is 'irresponsibility' for when they say we'll take away the rights of workers,” he said. “The Constitution ensures all labor rights. Not a single right will be deprived from Brazilian workers,” he added.
