Lower house to vote on charges against Temer on return from recess

The congressional return from mid-year recess on Wednesday (Aug. 2) will mark a crucial week for the government. Upon resuming their parliamentary activities officially, lower house members will hold a floor vote on whether to accept the corruption charges filed by Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot against President Michel Temer.

Last Friday (July 28), lower house Speaker Rodrigo Maia maintained he would stick to the voting date, which was slated the day before the start of parliamentary recess on July 18. Maia said holding the vote was “the country's best choice” and he was confident that the minimum required attendance for the vote would be achieved on Wednesday.

The house rules require the presence of 52 deputies to open the meeting, but in order to initiate the vote on the charges, two thirds of the total 513 deputies (342) must be present on the floor.
