On the date marking a hundred years since the birth of Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest figures in the 20th century, President Michel Temer highlighted the example of the South African leader in the fight against injustice, intolerance, and oppression. In a message posted today (Jul. 18) on Twitter, Temer referred to Mandela’s fight as a source of inspiration.

“Today, we celebrate the hundredth year since Nelson Mandela’s birth. His contribution are still a guide in the fight against injustice, intolerance, and oppression. His fight is an inspiration to all, as many lives were saved after hate was abandoned,” Temer says in his tweet.

For Mandela’s contribution to the struggle against racism, July 18 was turned by the United Nations into Mandela Day, or the Nelson Mandela International Day, for freedom, justice, and democracy, an opportunity to remember his dedication and his services to humanity, including his efforts in addressing the HIV virus and his key role in conflict resolution.
