President Jair Bolsonaro received this Thursday (16) a group of teenage athletes who participated in the Brazilian School Games (JEBs). The competition took place in the country again after 17 years of interruption and was held between October 29th and November 5th, in Rio de Janeiro. The reception was at the Planalto Palace, in Brasília, but was not open to the public.

According to the federal government, this edition of the Brazilian School Games was the biggest in history. The competition brought together 5,114 athletes aged 12 to 14 years, from 27 federative units, to compete in 17 sports. Taking into account technicians, delegates, referees, volunteers and support professionals, the JEBs 2021 involved 7,862 direct participants. 2,160 medals and 189 trophies were distributed.

The Ministry of Citizenship transferred R$ 17.9 million to the Brazilian Confederation of School Sports (CBDE) as a way of enabling the holding of games, purchase of sports equipment and the hiring of referees and those responsible for the medical areas and sanitary protocols. The vast majority of the competitions used the structure of the Olympic Park in Barra, the main legacy of sports infrastructure for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The space includes facilities under federal government management, such as the Arenas Cariocas 1 and 2, the Velodrome and the Olympic Tennis Centre.

The Arena Carioca 3, the Maria Lenk Aquatic Complex and temporary facilities were also used in the Olympic Park. The athletics events took place at Cefan, a Brazilian Navy institution reformed for the Rio 2016 Games, and basketball was staged at the Youth Arena, in the Deodoro Olympic Complex, also modernized in the national Olympic cycle and under the management of the Brazilian Army.

The JEBs had official competitions in athletics, basketball, futsal, handball, judo, volleyball, beach volleyball, swimming, table tennis, chess, karate, wrestling, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, badminton, cycling and taekwondo.
