Brazil to invest BRL 700 bi in infrastructure by 2033
Brazil should reach BRL 700 billion in infrastructure projects on water and basic sanitation by 2033—fruit of the Legal Framework on Sanitation, sanctioned on July 15, 2020. The eight auctions held following the introduction of the legal framework have secured approximately BRL 45 billion for the sector.
In an allusion to the World Water Day, celebrated Tuesday (Mar. 22), Brazil’s Minister of Regional Development Rogério Marinho took stock of the projects under the São Francisco river transposition enterprise as well as the sanitation and treated water distribution network expansion in Brazil, especially in the Northeast.
In a speech aired on radio and television countrywide, Marinho underscored the role of water and sanitation in the lives of Brazilians. The transposition of the São Francisco River, he said, is expected to reach 16.5 million people across 545 cities in seven states.
“We are implementing the largest water infrastructure program ever seen in our country, boasting over 3 thousand kilometers of canals and water mains completed, under construction, or to be built. These are structuring and transformative efforts,” he declared.
The minister also mentioned the Águas Brasileiras program (“Brazilian Waters”), which revamps water basins and boosts the development of regions with low socioeconomic indicators.
Rogério Marinho explained that, in addition to the economic and social advantages, providing water and sanitation can be seen as a basic health measure, and restated the importance of supply in regions historically assailed by shortages.
