On the last day of the relay in Brazil, the Olympic torch has been passed from the hands of International Olympic Committee Chief Thomas Bach to the hands of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The UN Secretary-General passed the Flame to Thaiza Vitória da Silva, 15-year-old Brazilian handball player, and member of the UN Women programme “One Win Leads to Another,” which seeks to empower girls from poor areas through sport. Earlier, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka also participated in the relay.

Girl from Ipanema

Close to Vinícius de Moraes Street, Thaiza passed the Flame to Helô Pinheiro, who inspired the song “Girl from Ipanema,” written by Vinícius de Moraes and Tom Jobim.

At the end of the day, the torch will light the cauldron at the Olympic opening ceremony in Maracanã Stadium. In the ceremony, artists like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Luiz Melodia will perform, and athletes' delegations will parade, officially opening the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
