Brazil allocates BRL 56.3 million to National Transplant System
The Brazilian Ministry of Health, following a review of the Quality Program in the Donation and Transplant Process (Qualidot), has released BRL 56,364,215.01 to improve the capacity of transplant centers within the country’s public healthcare network, the SUS.
These funds will progressively bolster the budget for organ and bone marrow transplants, with transplant centers receiving financial boosts of 40 percent to 80 percent based on new volume, quality, and safety indicators.
The Ministry of Health's evaluation revealed discrepancies in the previous indicators, methodologies, and methods established in 2022. The General Coordination of the National Transplant System stated that “these issues could impede the proper allocation of funds to the services.”
With the new classification, transplant centers that have been operating under the SUS for more than two consecutive and uninterrupted years will have access to funding based on the type of transplant and the points acquired after the Qualidot review.
The Ministry of Health reported a 9.5 percent increase in the number of transplants in Brazil from January to August 2023, with 18,461 organs transplanted, including cornea and bone marrow, compared to the same period in 2022, when 16,848 procedures were carried out. The financial contribution aims to enhance patient care both before and after transplants, as well as improve the treatment of complications following procedures.
