The state governments of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul have decreed a state of emergency due to fires in the northern region of the pantanal, one of Brazil’s six biomes, located in the country’s Central-West region.
Most calls denounce the lack of medical care, the need for better schools, lack of transportation, and violence against indigenous leaders in connection with land disputes.
The magnitude of the burned area in the Pantanal until September 27 confirms that this has been an atypical year not just for the biome, but for the whole region.
After the outcome of Brazil’s presidential elections, at least four attacks were reported in indigenous communities in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Pernambuco.
