Two hundred and seventy-two wooden crosses were installed on Thursday (Jan. 25) on the central lawn of the Esplanade of Ministries, in front of the Congress building in Brasília. The initiative is a plea for justice for the victims of the dam collapse.
Each cross bears the name of one of the people killed in the collapse of Dam I (B1). The rupture caused the collapse of two other dams (B-IV and B-IV-A) at the same mine and, according to the Minas Gerais government, dumped approximately 12 million cubic meters of tailings.
In addition to the surrounding area, the incident affected rivers, waterways, and at least 26 towns, wreaking environmental and socio-economic havoc across the state. Three bodies are yet to be located.
