Brazilians' spending abroad down 21% this year
Brazilians spent $8.291 billion abroad between January and May this year, 21% less than in the same period last year, the Central Bank reported Monday (June 22).
In May, Brazilians' spending abroad totaled $1.414 billion, down 42% compared to the same month last year ($2.259 billion). According to the head of the Central Bank's Economics Department, Tulio Maciel, the dollar hike is the main factor driving down international travel spending, followed by an economic slowdown.
The Central Bank expects Brazilians' expenditures abroad to drop 17% in June 2015 compared to a year ago. Spending by foreign visitors to Brazil should also decrease in June compared to last year, when the World Cup brought a larger visitor inflow to Brazil.
From January to May, foreigners spent $2.498 billion in Brazil, as against $2.791 billion in the same period last year. In May, these revenues totaled $417 million. The Central Bank expects the international travel deficit resulting from inbound and outbound traveler spending to stand at $14.5 billion this year.
