Sustainable Rural project to benefit farmers in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest
The project will benefit 3,710 farmers from three Amazon states (Mato Grosso, Pará and Rondônia) and four states entering the Atlantic Forest biome (Bahia, Minas Gerais, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul). That's the goal of the Sustainable Rural project, a partnership agreement established between Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply (MAPA) and UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), with the participation of Banco do Brasil (BB) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which will be the executing agency.
The project received $26 million in funds to carry out the project within four years. The funds were donated by the UK International Climate Fund. The farmers benefit by the initiative will have more access to credit facilities for investing in low-carbon and environmentally beneficial technologies for agriculture and extractivism.
According to Banco do Brasil Agribusiness Director Clenio Teribele, this project is innovative due to the results-based financing payment. This means that the beneficiary only receives the funds contracted after the bank and the technical service officials report that the low-carbon technologies had been implemented.
The Sustainable Rural website was also launched on the internet, to provide information for institutions involved in the project and for educational and research institutions related to rural development.
