Brazilian car sales down 27.9% in Jan-Apr
Carmakers based in Brazil produced 169,800 vehicles in April, down 13.6% compared with March and down 22.9% compared with April last year. In the year-to-date, sales dropped 25.8%.
Sales of new motor vehicles, including cars, light trucks, light commercial (like vans) and buses, ended the period of January to April, 2016 down 27.9%, totaling 893,700 units sold. In April, 162,900 vehicles were sold, 9.1% lower than the figure reached in March this year and 25.7% lower than the result of April 2015.
Data were released by the National Association for Auto Manufacturers (ANFAVEA). Antonio Megale, ANFAVEA'S new president, noted that despite the decrease, the pace of decline in sales has been reduced. Earlier this year, the shrinkage percentage was 38.8%.

Employment
According to Megale, the companies have made an effort to protect the jobs. For that reason, today 30% of the workforce is under flexible working regime, 6,044 of the jobs are under lay-off regime and 29,600 of them in the Employment Protection Program (PPE). "It is a worrisome situation and companies are making efforts to protect jobs," he pointed out.
Compared with April last year, vacancies declined 8%, having now a base of 128,441 workers. To expand the jobs supply, the country has to recover growth, defended ANFAVEA's president.
Exports
ANFAVEA's president recognized that the government has played an important role in working towards agreements to increase exports in general. According to him, the bilateral agreements provide an alternative to offset weak domestic sales and such contracts were negotiated with Uruguay, Peru, Colombia, and African countries.
Megale also reported that the next data released for the industry's performance shall announce new forecasts for production and sales, which was not done yet because of the political moment. "We need to wait for the stabilization of the next few weeks and first check the formulation of macroeconomic policies," he said.
