Brazil’s employment up for fifth month in a row

In August, 1.382 million people were hired

For the fifth consecutive month, Brazil reported a positive balance for formal employment. In August, extra job openings totaled 121,387—the difference between 1,382,407 admissions and 1,261,020 dismissals. The data come from the Economy Ministry’s employment report CAGED, released this week.

Year-to-date, 593,467 jobs were created, up 1.55 percent from last year. Four sectors of the economy saw a positive change and two negative in August.

First came services (61,730 job posts), followed by trade (23,626), manufacturing industry (19,517), construction (17,306), public administration (1,391) and mining (1,235). Agriculture (-3,341) and industrial services of public utility (-77) saw negative figures.

Regions

All of Brazil’s five macro-regions saw a positive balance for employment ion August. In the Southeast, 51,382 jobs were created, followed by the Northeast (34,697), the South (13,267), the Central-West (11,431), and the North (10,610).

On social media, President Jair Bolsonaro noted that “Brazil is still recovering.”
