Banco do Brasil (BB) has been selected to join one of the most select groups of sustainable corporations. The shares on the New York Exchange will be included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), under the categories world market and emerging. Created in 1999, the portfolio is made up of ten percent of the companies with the highest performance in each sector surveyed.

To join the group, firms must adopt the best market practices through a series of initiatives including the conception of products and services contributing to the transition to an inclusive, low-carbon economy. The indicator also assesses ecologically efficient administrative practices and continuous investment in improvement.

In addition to Banco do Brazil, 24 banks across the globe were listed on the DJSI, which is revised each year. In the 2020 assessment, Banco do Brasil stood out in seven of the 23 themes evaluated in the economic, environmental, and social realms.

In a note, Banco do Brasil said the appointment to join the index represents the international market’s acknowledgment of Banco do Brasil’s work and its initiative to incorporate the issue into its corporate strategy as well as its business and administrative practices.

This year, Banco do Brasil inaugurated its first solar energy plants. The first was brought into operation in March in Porteirinha, Minas Gerais state; the second last month, in São Domingos do Araguaia, in the state of Pará.
