Brazil gov’t earmarks BRL 479.8 mi for storm-hit areas
President Jair Bolsonaro has earmarked BRL 479.87 million for 150 municipalities across 11 states assailed by flooding since the end of last year. The money should come as extraordinary credit to the federal budget of 2022.
The funds will be put towards restoring infrastructure in the areas affected by the downpours in states that declared a state of emergency or public calamity. Among the projects planned are the construction of bridges and homes and the stabilization of slopes.
Under the law, extraordinary credit lies outside the spending cap and are meant for urgent and unforeseeable expenses that had no budget allocation. It can only be requested through a provisional measure, which must be approved by Congress.
So far, Brazil’s Ministry of Regional Development has received requests for funding for the reconstruction of areas across 150 municipalities in 11 states.
