Brazil and US reaffirm commitment to reduce non-tariff barriers

Brazil and the United States reaffirmed, in a joint communiqué, their commitment to prevent and reduce non-tariff barriers in bilateral trade. The text points out the initiatives discussed during the so-called Commercial Dialogue held in Washington on July 21. The communiqué was released on Tuesday (Aug. 30) by the Ministry of Economy.

The round of talks, co-chaired by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) of the Brazilian Ministry of Economy and the Undersecretariat for International Trade of the U.S. Department of Commerce, addressed priority issues for both governments and the private sector. The themes were distributed in thematic groups in the following areas: trade facilitation, good regulatory practices, conformity assessment procedures, standards and metrology, intellectual property, and digital economy.

Created in 2006, the Brazil-U.S. Business Dialogue is the bilateral cooperation mechanism that has remained active for the longest time between the two countries. The initiative's main objective is to encourage the flow of trade and mutual investments by preventing, reducing, and eliminating non-tariff barriers.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Brasilia, in 2023, on a date yet to be set.
