Micro, small businesses created 8 out of 10 new jobs in 2023

They generated 1.18 million new jobs

A survey by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) found that micro and small businesses accounted for eight out of every ten jobs created in 2023.

The data show that, of the total balance of 1.48 million new jobs made available last year by companies of any size, small businesses were responsible for 1.18 million new openings—or 80.1 percent. Medium and large corporations generated 209,99 thousand positions—14.2 percent of the total.

This is the third consecutive year micro and small companies have contributed the largest share of new jobs in Brazil. In 2023, services led the way in job creation, generating 631 thousand new jobs. Among medium-sized and large companies, the balance stood at 181,87 thousand new posts.

Highlights

“Other sectors, such as trade (263,25 thousand vacancies) and construction (180,52), stood out among micro and small companies, none of which had a negative balance between January and December. Among medium and large companies, further highlights include the manufacturing industry (23.5 thousand) and trade (13.23 thousand),” the study reads.

Chief among economic activities were restaurants and other food and beverage establishments (69 thousand hires), building construction (58,100), and retail trade in general merchandise, with a predominance of food products (47,900).

In December 2023, the difference between total admissions and dismissals was similar to the figures recorded in recent years, with a negative balance of 430 thousand jobs. Among micro and small companies, 178 thousand posts were closed. For medium-sized and large companies, the negative balance was 195 thousand.
