List of 349 athletes to receive Brazil’s sports allowance unveiled
A list with 349 athletes of Olympic and Paralympic sports covered by the Podium category of Brazil’s Bolsa Atleta allowance was made public today (Feb. 4). The category includes athletes in the top 20 for their sports or competition.
Beneficiaries must sign a Term of Membership, described officially as “a contract with the Special Secretariat for Sports.” Payments under Podium range from BRL 5 thousand to 15 thousand.
“After all 12 installments are received, the allowance may be renewed if a yearly report proves that the requirements under the Podium category are met as well as the stipulations under the Sports Plan and the clauses in the Membership Term,” the Ministry of Citizenship declares.
The allowance
The Brazilian government has one of the world’s biggest individual sponsorship programs in sports: the Bolsa Atleta.
The initiative offers “minimum conditions for sportspeople to dedicate themselves exclusively to training and competitions—locally, as well as South American, Pan-American, global, Olympic, and Paralympic tournaments,” the ministry reports.
After the Membership Term is signed, athletes receive 12 installments, with values set according to the following categories: Athlete Basic (BRL 370), Student (BRL 370), National (BRL 925), International (BRL 1,850), Olympic/Paralympic (BRL 3,100), and Podium (BRL 5 thousand to BRL 15 thousand).
