Brazil draw 0-0 against Jamaica, bid farewell to Women's World Cup
In a decisive match at the women's World Cup, Brazil’s team led by Pia Sundhage failed to get the goal they needed to advance to the round of 16. Following a goalless draw against Jamaica on Wednesday (Aug. 2) in Melbourne, Australia, the Brazilians bid farewell to the World Cup without even making it past the group stage, something that hasn't happened since 1995.
Finishing third in Group F with four points, Brazil found themselves behind both Jamaica, with five points, and France, who secured a 6-3 victory against Panama, leading them to the top spot with seven points.
As the final whistle blew, the Rectangular Stadium witnessed a range of emotions, from the joyous weeping of the Jamaican women, who qualified for the knockout stage for the first time in history, to the tearful disappointment of the Brazilians.
France's triumphant win over Panama, with Diani scoring a hat-trick for the French, sealed Brazil's elimination from the tournament.
As the group winners, the French women will await the second-placed team from Group H to determine their opponents for the next round on Tuesday (8) in Adelaide (Australia).
Similarly, Jamaica are waiting for the outcome of Group H to discover their opponents in the round of 16, which will also take place on Tuesday (8) in Melbourne (Australia).
