Artistic gymnastics: Brazil bags silver in women’s team competition
Brazil had another historic day at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, when they won the silver medal in the women’s team competition. Rebeca Andrade, Flávia Saraiva, Jade Barbosa, Lorrane Oliveira, and Júlia Soares scored 165.530 points and finished second only to the US (167.729). France rounded off the podium with 164.064.
This is the best result for a Brazilian team in the history of the competition, surpassing the fourth place in the 2022 edition, held in Liverpool, England.
“Throughout my administration, we’ve won both Olympic and world individual medals. We were missing a result like this in a team competition. It goes to show what we've been saying for years: Brazil now boasts a solid school of artistic gymnastics. Even though we have exceptional individual talents, this outcome comes as a result of a much broader process—the steps taken by a country that has embraced the sport and learned how to do gymnastics,” said Luciene Resende, head of the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation.
Before taking silver at the world championships, the Brazilian women’s squad secured their participation in the next edition of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
