Embratur chairman wants Adidas' apology
The chairman of Brazil's tourism board (Embratur), Flávio Dino, said Wednesday (Feb. 26) that he is still waiting for formal apologies by Adidas for selling T-shirts with sexually suggestive messages ahead of the 2014 World Soccer Cup. Adidas is one of the official sponsors of the tournament.
“I think something's still missing here, like a corporate apology to Brazil. In fact, there was [only] a statement saying that they have 'called off the campaign.' It's a shame Adidas hasn't apologized formally, but we still hope they do,” Dino said. Embratur is in charge of managing and supporting marketing initiatives that promote Brazil as a tourist destination abroad.
Dino referred to the T-shirt models as “disrespectful to all Brazilians and particularly detrimental to the dignity of Brazilian women.”
He has urged the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the 2014 World Soccer Cup sponsors to refrain from conveying messages similar in spirit to that of the Adidas t-shirts. It has also requested those entities to raise awareness of Brazil's Disque 100 (Call 100) hotline as a resource for reports against human rights violations including child abuse.
