Nets were left hanging untouched at the Arena Castelão, in the northeastern city of Fortaleza, throughout the 90-min-long second-round match between Brazil and Mexico. Brazil had to face the skilful man-marking of Mexico, who gave goalkeeper Julio Cesar a fright at least twice with shots form outside the penalty area. Fred and Neymar were given the best goal opportunities for Brazil.

The atmosphere in the crowd was one of harmony between Brazilians and Mexicans. Fans of both nations respectfully took turns in screaming and rooting for the players from their favorite teams.

In spite of the lack of goals, the Brazilian team had the support of their fans throughout the match.
