Rousseff flies over flooded areas in South Brazil
President Dilma Rousseff has flown over areas affected by heavy rains in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, South Brazil, for which she announced emergency and medium term action.
After the overflight on Tuesday (June 17), she spoke to journalists in a press conference in União da Vitória, Paraná, where she announced an emergency committee with federal, state, and local representatives. She said initially an emergency scheme will provide relief, safety, and shelter for those affected in Paraná, relying on $1.7 million in funds.
The amount was provided Monday (16), and includes 14,200 food baskets and 12,200 sleeping kits, plus army assistance with men, helicopters, and other transport. For Santa Catarina, $677,000 has been provided, according to Rousseff.
According to the latest Emergency Service update, 152 municipalities in the state of Paraná were hit by torrents and flooding, and 147 of them are in a state of emergency. Eleven people have died and 171 have been injured. Some 38,000 people were displaced and 5,000 homeless, and a total of over 594,000 were impacted. More than 13,000 houses were damaged across the state. In Santa Catarina, 41 municipalities were in a state of emergency by Monday (16).
