Brazil launches operation to enhance Amazon defense
The Armed Forces are launching operation Amazônia (Operation Amazon) today (Oct. 10), designed to improve defense and protect the sovereignty of Brazil's portion of the Amazon rainforest. The plans include efforts to control waterway traffic and provide training on offensive and defensive ground incursions, parachuting skills, and air defense. Community outreach and social services will also be provided for riverside communities.
The program is in its third edition, with past experiences in 2011 and 2012. This year, the training will last for ten days and involve about 4,000 men from the Navy, Army and Air Force.
“The Amazon's unique features can be very challenging for military operations, especially when it comes to overcoming long distances, difficulties getting to places by river, and because of the weather conditions,” said Army Gen. Guilherme de Oliveira, military commander for the Amazon. “The operation will help us enhance our troops' operational skills in the area,” he completed.
