Transsex allowed to change name without genital reconstruction
The Court of Rio de Janeiro has authorized a transsexual to change their name and gender used on legal documents without undergoing a genital reconstruction surgery. The decision was made late in August, but only now has it become public. The ruling has benefited Milena Pires Santana, who works as a civil servant. She said in a statement that this will help mitigate prejudice and avoid a number of embarrassing situations, as well as create harmony between her identity and her body. With the permission, she may now set about issuing a new identity card once all legal procedures are complete.
The successful plea was achieved through the support of the Center for Sexual Diversity and Homosexual Rights of the Public Defense Service. Coordinator Luciana Mota says the decision is an important step towards promoting the civil rights of transsexuals and transvestites. She argued that inconsistencies between one's physical appearance and the information reflected on their personal IDs can be a source of embarrassment. “Recognizing their rights to legal gender reassignment creates new hope for a dignified life,” she said.
