Brazil's Federal Revenue Service (RFB) launched an investigation into alleged offshore accounts held by its officers. In a statement released today (Mar. 18), the tax office said it is probing potential misconduct in each case as soon as the allegations came out.

According to a news report published on Tuesday (17) in Rio-based newspaper O Globo, the recently leaked list of 8,667 Brazilians holding numbered accounts with HSBC Switzerland in 2006-2007 includes five tax officials, four of whom work for RFB and one for the State Revenue Service of Rio de Janeiro. Having a numbered offshore account does not necessarily imply tax evasion in Brazil, but the account holders are still required to report the funds to the RFB and the Central Bank.

In a statement, the RFB noted that besides its internal investigation, it is cooperating with European authorities to obtain the full official list of the nearly 9,000 Brazilians holding accounts with HSBC Switzerland, besides ongoing procedures to identify potential tax violations by those among the listed Brazilians whose names are already known.
