Rousseff to announce Brazil's COP 21 goals Sunday
President Dilma Rousseff will announce Brazil's greenhouse emissions reduction target for the 21st Conference of Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 21) during her address at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York this upcoming Sunday (Sept. 27). COP-21 takes place in December this year in Paris.
“The document Brazil will present is ambitious, innovative. The country has held extensive consultations with civil society organizations and economic players [to draft the document],” said Raphael Azeredo, Environment Director of the Foreign Ministry.
At the summit, slated for September 25–27 in New York, member countries will sign up to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will guide the nations on a global agenda for sustainable development by 2030, superseding the Millennium Development Goals.
Work on the SDGs began with the Rio+20 Conference, with 193 participating countries. There are 17 goals and 169 universal targets. The new agenda is regarded as innovative by the UN, because the goals were agreed directly with member states and the society through extensive consultations worldwide. The proposals include eradicating hunger and poverty, promoting sustainable agriculture, and changing consumption and production standards.
President Rousseff will deliver the opening address at the UN General Assembly on Monday (28). On Sunday, at the invitation of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, she has a luncheon with the presidents of France, François Hollande, and Peru, Ollanta Humala, to discuss the course of climate negotiations towards COP 21. According to the Foreign Ministry, bilateral meetings with other heads of state are scheduled.
Rousseff is expected to fly to the United States on Thursday (24).
