Rousseff overflies areas affected by rains in southern Brazil
President Dilma Rousseff overflew today (Oct. 24) areas poured by rainstorms in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
Before the flight over the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul state, the president announced that officials from the federal government will arrive in the state on Monday (Oct. 26) to help municipalities that need to submit documents to receive federal funds.
"In addition to the 66 municipalities we had already declared a state of emergency, we will come with a team formed by state government officials and mayors to take the necessary measures so that they [municipalities] meet the requirements to be declared state of emergency. Because we cannot use federal funds, not observing the law," stated Rousseff.
The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul registered that 132 cities were impacted by rainstorms that lashes the state since the beginning of the month. About 177,000 people have been affected. 6,408 families were displaced and 1,353 became homeless.
Santa Catarina
In Santa Catarina, almost 30,000 people from 97 towns were impacted by the rains from October, according to the local Civil Defense report. 1,790 people were displaced and 2,933 became homeless. Seventeen municipalities have declared state of emergency, which is the condition imposed to receive federal aid.
