IBGE noted that with the results from last December, the sector now stands 19.5% below its record production level reached in June 2013.

Brazil's industrial output closed out 2015 down 8.3%, the sharpest cumulative 12-year drop since November 2009. The data was reported Tuesday (Feb. 2) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The sector also shrank in December 2015 compared to November (down 0.7%). As against December 2014, the decline was even sharper (11.9%).

According to IBGE, industry continued its weak performance trend in December 2015, which was “reflected not only in its string of seven consecutive monthly declines—the longest downward string for the time series—but also in the prevalence of negative rates in December.” The most notable decreases were those for capital goods and durable consumer goods.

As a measure of the extent of the industrial contraction, IBGE noted that with the results from last December, the sector now stands 19.5% below its record production level reached in June 2013.
