Brazil judge orders to block WhatsApp for 72 hours
This is not the first time that WhatsApp has problems with Brazilian courts. In December, the service was suspended for 12 hours for the order of Judge Sandra Regina Nostre Marques, from the court of São Bernardo do Campo, in São Paulo.
A judge from the northeastern state of Sergipe ordered phone carriers to block access to WhatsApp messaging app for 72 hours, starting this Monday (May 2).
According to SindiTelebrasil, an association representing local telephony companies, all companies received the order and shall begin to comply with the court order at 2 pm.
The court injunction was issued by judge Marcel Montalvão, the same judge who in March ordered the imprisonment of Facebook Latin America Vice-President Diego Dzodan. The judge granted the request of the Federal Police and the Public Prosecution Office.
In a note, the Sergipe Court explained that the order to block WhatsApp was issued for the same reason that led to Dzodan's imprisonment request: the company has not complied with court orders to provide evidence in a confidential investigation into organized crime and drug trafficking.
