More Brazilian soldiers sent to Haiti
A Brazilian Air Force (FAB) craft left Brasília for Haiti today (Oct. 17) carrying 18 tons of maintenance material and 62 navy and army military soldiers to support the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), led by Brazil.
The Hurricane Matthew roared across the Caribbean on October 4, and worsened the situation of the country affected by an earthquake on January 2010 and by three-years drought related to the El Niño.
The military soldiers will work on the maintenance of computer, medical, and refrigeration equipment, and of vehicles and weapons. Since 2004, Brazilian troops have participated in the MINUSTAH and carried out operations in the most violent areas of the Caribbean country. It has also provided humanitarian aid and strengthened Haitian national institutions.
Members of MINUSTAH have moved from the mission's headquarters in Port-au-Prince to the areas most affected by the hurricane, located in the country's southwest. They work rebuilding roads and bridges, and providing humanitarian convoys with security.
This is the third mission conducted by the squad in Haiti with the Boeing 767, an aircraft that carries heavier loads and came into operation in July this year. On Friday (14), the squad carried 120 tents to Haiti in aid of the homeless.
