LATAM changes baggage policy, new rules effective since Thursday

LATAM Airlines has introduced changes to its baggage policy for domestic and international flights in Brazil effective as of Thursday (May 18). Under the new rules, the baggage allowance is one bag weighing up to 23 kilos (this was already the existing weight allowance, but there were no restrictions as to the number of bags).

For international flights, the baggage allowance has been reduced from two 32-kilo bags to two 23-kilo bags. Surcharges for excess weight have also changed—there are fixed rates based on bag weight and size. The changes apply to tickets issued from Thursday on.

As of July, LATAM will charge for baggage in domestic flights and offer alternative fares to passengers who choose not to check in baggage. The first bag will be charged R$30 ($9.65) for early purchases.

Last March, Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) approved changes in air travel regulations, allowing airlines to change their baggage policies, including by charging fees for checked baggage. The measure was put on hold by a court, but eventually authorized in late April.

Under the new rules, the maximum carry-on luggage allowance has been raised from five to ten kilos for all airlines.

Other carriers

Starting on June 1, Azul Linhas Aéreas will offer cheaper fares to passengers opting out of checked baggage. Buyers choosing this fare type will still be able to include luggage up to 23 kilos for an additional fee of R$30 ($9.65) later if they change their minds. Customers paying regular fares will still have a 23-kilo baggage allowance.

Gol airlines will also introduce a “Light” fare on June 20 for those not checking in baggage, whereas regular fares will cover a 23-kilo allowance. Light customers will still be able to pay a separate R$30 ($9.65) fee later on to include a baggage allowance of one 23-kilo bag on domestic flights.

Avianca said it was going to discuss the issue further in the coming months to create custom fare options that meet the needs of different customer profiles.
