Criminals storm into Brazil airport, steal $5 million in cash
Criminals stormed into the apron of the International Airport of Viracopos, in Campinas, a city some 100 km from São Paulo, and escaped with $5 million in cash. The robbery took place on Sunday evening (Mar. 4).
The information was confirmed by the Federal Police press office in Campinas. The cash was being transported by Swiss carrier Lufthansa, and was headed for Zurich, Switzerland.
The robbery took place at approximately 9:30 pm local time, reported concessionaire Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos, which controls the airport. The criminals used a Hilux pickup truck adorned with stickers of the airport security firm. Police agents examined the scene and heard witnesses, but failed to say whether arrests were conducted.
The concessionaire also reported that no one was injured and that the probes are now under the responsibility of the Federal Police, which have opened an inquiry into the case. Brink's, the company tasked with the transport of cash, said they are willing to provide authorities with clarifications.
