Gov’t rebukes Brazilian men who harassed woman in Russia
Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday (Jun. 19) publicly condemned the attitude of a group of Brazilians recorded on video harassing a woman during World Cup festivities in Russia.
In the video, surfaced on social media and aired by news outlets in several countries, men wearing Brazil jerseys appear standing next to an unidentified woman. Apparently not able to make out the sexist meaning of the phrases chanted in Portuguese by the crowd, she simply attempts to repeat the words suggested by the men.
In a note, the ministry says sexism and misogyny are never acceptable, especially at an event like the World Cup, held to “promote integration between peoples and cultures across the world.”
The authorities also declared that none of the men involved in the episode is an official at the Ministry of Tourism. The clarification came after rumors that one of the men identified was on an official trip with the ministry.
The Brazilian Embassy in Russia reported they received informal messages by Brazilians speaking out against the behavior exhibited by the group of fans.
