Brazil allots $9 million to curb Amazon fires
The Brazilian government has earmarked $9.14 million for the Ministry of Defense in a bid to help curb the wildfire in the Legal Amazon. The amount comes from the budget for the so-called Operations to Ensure Law and Order (GLO).
Last Friday (Aug 23), a center for joint operations of the Ministry of Defense was assembled to implement measures in border areas, indigenous territories, and other regions in the Amazon rainforest. Over 43 thousand members of the Brazilian Armed Forces have been deployed. They are expected to join efforts with environmental control and public security agencies.
Of the nine states making up Brazil’s Legal Amazon, seven (Acre, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, and Tocantins) have had their requests to receive backup to curb the fires lodged and granted.
