The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, said today (15) that, if there is no change in the rules for preventing covid-19 or in the epidemiological framework of the pandemic, the holding of parades of samba schools in Marquês de Sapucaí is guaranteed. Paes devoted a series of posts to the matter on his Twitter account and said the city was discussing "very strict" rules with the Independent League of Rio de Janeiro Samba Schools (Liesa), which will be presented to the municipal scientific committee.

"This information is important to reduce speculation about this party. Carnival at Marquês de Sapucaí requires preparation well in advance, including the transfer of public resources to the samba schools," he said.

The mayor argued that "the Marquês de Sapucaí is nothing more than the samba stadium" and compared the holding of the party to soccer games with fans, which are already allowed in the city. Paes also said that he is using as an example for Carnival the role played by Flamengo's directors in organizing the games.

"Having the possibility, as there is at this moment and happens weekly, of soccer games with the controls already foreseen in the norms established by the city hall, there is no reason not to guarantee that the Marquês de Sapucaí carnival will take place".

Since the end of October, the city of Rio de Janeiro has authorized the holding of football matches with stadiums operating at 100% of their public capacity. Until then, only the entry of fans up to 50% of the stadium's maximum capacity was authorized.

On the last 10th, Fluminense qualified for the Libertadores after beating Chapecoense in front of an audience of more than 48 thousand people in the stands of Maracanã. A similar number of fans followed the match between Corinthians and Flamengo at the stadium, on November 17th.

In 2020, the last year in which there was a parade of samba schools, 61 thousand tickets were sold for each day of the Special Group parade, on Sunday, Monday and Saturday of the champions, according to a balance released at the time by Riotur. As for the series A parades, on Friday and Saturday, there were around 75 thousand people per day. In addition to the revelers who watch the parades, the components that make up the wings of each school also pass by the Sambódromo.

blocks

Regarding the other carnival festivities, the mayor considered that there will not be a uniform decision for the authorization of the events. He explained that parties in closed spaces make it possible to charge for vaccination or the presentation of negative tests for covid-19. Carnival blocks, in the mayor's view, require "a more detailed analysis", because it is not possible to control the access of the participants.

The municipality of Rio de Janeiro has already vaccinated 79.1% of the population with two doses or a single dose of vaccines against covid-19, and 87.7% of the population took at least one dose. When considering only the population aged 12 or over, the percentage of people with a complete vaccination schedule rises to 92%.

According to the Hospital Census of the Municipal Health Department, there are 22 hospitalized patients with covid-19 in the city's public network, and 26 patients with post-covid-19 conditions. In the last two days, the moving average of deaths in seven days was one death per day in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, which had all its areas classified as low risk for disease transmission in the last epidemiological bulletin of the city hall.
