Rock in Rio, to be held from September 2 to 11 at the Olympic Park, is giving Rio’s tourism sector a big kick-start. On Tuesday (Aug 16), the Rio Convention and Visitors Bureau estimated event revenues to reach nearly $160 million, with the generation of almost $8 million for the city in taxes. The estimate was based on average individual spending on lodging, food, transport in the country, personal shopping, and tourism in the city.

As in previous editions of the festival, hotels estimate full occupation of the beds in businesses located near the event. Other tourism segments should benefit from the concerts, as tourists take the opportunity to get to know the city.

“Rock in Rio has become known as one of the biggest festivals in the world and is now regarded, along with New Year’s Eve and Carnival, one of the main events in Rio, with a positive impact on the city as a whole,” said the Bureau’s Executive Director Roberta Werner, who is optimistic about the next edition, which comes after a three-year break.
