Blockades of Brazilian highways generates BRL 5.5 million in fines
More than BRL 5.5 million in fines have been imposed on protesters who are blocking highways across the country. The information was released on Wednesday (Oct. 2) by the Ministry of Justice and Public Safety.
By yesterday, 912 fines had been reported. The value of each fine varies between BRL 5 thousand and BRL 17 thousand, depending on the type of infraction.
According to the Brazilian Traffic Code, it is considered to be a very serious violation when drivers use vehicles to deliberately interrupt, restrict, or disturb the circulation on roads, without the authorization of the traffic authority. The highest fine of BRL 17,000 is imposed on those identified as blockade organizers. "In case of recurrence, double the fine is applied in the period of 12 months," the code reads.
Blockades
According to the Federal Highway Police, early Wednesday morning (3) 17 Brazilian states still had roadblocks, although 563 interdictions had been released.
The police action began after demonstrators who support President Bolsonaro showed their discontent with the proclamation of the election results by the Superior Electoral Court, with victory for the candidate of the Workers' Party Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday (30).
