Brazil: Hélio Doyle is appointed new president of the EBC

Journalist was professor at UnB, reporter and editor in several media

The nomination of journalist Hélio Doyle as president of Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) was officialized this Tuesday (14). He was occupying an advisory position at the company.

Hélio Doyle worked as reporter, editor and chief editor at vehicles such as Correio Braziliense, O Estado de S. Paulo, Jornal de Brasília, Opinião, Folha de S.Paulo, Rede Globo, Veja, Isto É, Brasil Extra, Zero Hora, and Jornal do Brasil. For 28 years he was a professor at the School of Communication at the University of Brasília (UnB). He also worked as head of the Press Office for the Federal District Government. He is the author of the books Assim é a velha política and Interregno – o feitiço de Tobago. 

On the 26th, the Minister-in-chief of the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency, Paulo Pimenta, had announced that Doyle would be the new president of EBC.

Doyle will definitely take over the position, after the transition management of journalist Kariane Costa, employee representative at the company's Board of Directors since 2021. For a month, she commanded the company with the goal of resuming the public character of EBC's vehicles and valuing the company's staff.

Transition

At the inauguration ceremony, on January 16, Kariane had said that her management would be dedicated to the rebirth of public communication. The decree with the appointment of Kariane and the changes in the EBC's board of directors wasofficialized by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on January 13.

With a degree in Journalism, former EBC president Kariane Costa Silva Oliveira is 41 years old and has more than 18 years of experience in the field. An EBC concurrent since 2012, she was an ombudsman journalist, a reporter for Rádio Nacional, and a sectorist for the Planalto Palace and the National Congress. She was a finalist in 2018 for the Vladmir Herzog award for her report The Venezuelan People and the Crisis.

During Kariane Costa's management, the company resumed its public mission and dialogue with workers. The Gender and Race Equity Committee will restart its activities this Tuesday. The transition board established a commitment to end bullying and laid the foundations of a campaign for the mental health of the employees. In journalism, there was coverage on the investigations of the coup acts and on the rights of indigenous peoples, the black population and the LGBTQIA+ community.
