The death toll on the northern coast of São Paulo has risen to 49, with 48 victims from São Sebastião and one from Ubatuba. Thirty-eight bodies have been identified—13 men, 12 women, and 13 children. The region was hit by strong storms over the weekend, with flooding and landslides.

Rescue teams are working to find the missing people. Efforts are concentrated in Barra do Sahy, a district in São Sebastião, where several houses were covered over and people were swept away by an avalanche of mud.

The Hospital Regional do Litoral Norte, in Caraguatatuba, still has 17 people in a stable health condition.

Rio–Santos

Yesterday evening (Feb. 22), the last blocked spot on the highway connecting Rio and Santos was cleared, near Juquehy. The traffic, however, is only free for rescue and service vehicles at the moment.

Weather forecast

Rain is likely to continue to fall on the north coast in the next few days. The current forecast is 35 millimeters of rain in São Sebastião and Ubatuba today.
