At least 200 hectares of Atlantic forest have been destroyed in a fire raging in the Monte Pascoal National Park in Porto Seguro, Bahia. According to the state government, the team of firefighters, who have been fighting the blaze since last week, have been reinforced by a group of 35 firefighters and two aircraft.
The request for support to fight the fire was made Sunday (Nov. 19) by the park's superintendent, Patrícia Pataxó.
Located in the far south of Bahia, the park, which belongs to the Atlantic forest biome that is already under threat, is the only one in the country to be classified as historic, as it covers the first portion of land in Brazil spotted by Portuguese navigators. The region is home to a great diversity of animals and plants.
