Seven cultural venues across São Paulo city are hosting the 31st edition of the MixBrasil Festival—the largest LGBTQIA+ event in Latin America—starting today (Nov. 9) and ending on November 19. This year’s theme is A gente nunca foi tão Mix (“We’ve never been so mixed”), alluding to the festival’s welcoming approach to the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities, as well as the wide range of formats featured on its line-up.

Over the course of 11 days, attractions will include multimedia theater shows from Taiwan, France, and Brazil, as well as screenings of 119 films from 35 countries and 13 Brazilian states, queer-themed extended-reality installations from the US, Finland, Chile, France, Brazil, Germany, and Portugal, not to mention literature and performances.

The public will be given a chance to check out the latest in the world of games through MixGames, which will showcase a selection of games committed to the cause.

The festival also features the Ícone Mix award, which honors actress, screenwriter, playwright, director and trans representation activist Renata Carvalho, in addition to Crescendo com a diversidade (“Growing up with diversity”), for kids.

Regarding the activities for children, festival director André Fischer discussed the importance of bringing a message that contributes to a greater understanding and true acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community from an early age.

“It’s been 30 years [since the festival was first held], and we believe things have evolved, but not that much. We really need to do some educational work. That’s why, when we talk about LGBTQIA+ cultural production, we’re talking information,” Fischer argued.

The online program starts on November 9 and can be watched for free on the platforms Sesc Digital, Spcine Play, and Itaú Cultural Play.
