Brazil's Armed Forces to act in G20 security
The Eastern Military Command has announced that the operation for the G20 Leaders' Summit, scheduled for November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro, will mobilize resources from the Brazilian Navy, Army, and Air Force, in collaboration with the state government, municipal authorities, various agencies, and public security organizations.
The Army will deploy approximately 7,500 men and women to carry out tasks including escorting authorities, securing perimeters, protecting critical infrastructure, patrolling roads and key areas, conducting counter-terrorism operations, managing electronic warfare, ensuring cyber defense, implementing anti-aircraft measures, safeguarding against drones, and providing chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense.
The Navy will provide maritime security by controlling access to the city's ports, safeguarding coastal areas, protecting critical infrastructure, and supporting ground operations.
The Air Force will oversee airspace control and security at embarkation and disembarkation terminals, as well as along the roads and areas surrounding Galeão and Santos Dumont airports.
"The key asset is the complementarity between all institutions, agencies, and bodies working together to support another major international event in Rio de Janeiro, helping to showcase the country's image on the global stage," said the Eastern Military Command.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decreed the deployment of the Armed Forces for the Guarantee of Law and Order (GLO) in Rio de Janeiro during the G20 Leaders' Summit.
The event will host around 60 foreign delegations, including over 40 heads of state, which requires a high level of coordination to integrate and enhance efforts to protect the attending authorities.
