In prison since 2004 in Jakarta, capital city of Indonesia, for carrying 6kg of cocaine inside surf boards and sentenced to death in 2005, Brazilian citizen Rodrigo Gularte, 42, was executed on Tuesday (Apr 28), at 02:25 pm (GMT -3).

The information was confirmed to Agência Brasil by Leonardo Carvalho Monteiro, a representative for Brazil's Embassy in the Indonesian capital. He says that, before the execution, Gularte was visited by a priest, who was also his spiritual guide. According to Monteiro, after the sentence was executed, the bodies of the convicts started being prepared and would be taken to Jakarta in two hours.

The execution by firing squad took place in the prison facility of Nusakambangan, in Cilacap, some 400km from the capital.

Carvalho also reports that Angelita Mauxfekdt, Gularte's cousin, who had been close to him during his last months in prison, was informed of the execution and was with her cousin around 4 am (GMT -3).

Before the convicts were put to death, Carvalho declared he would be keeping Mauxfekdt company in a room near the place of execution. According to Indonesian law, after the execution, the bodies are recognized by family members and representatives from the convicts' countries, in case they are foreigners.

Convicts were notified of the execution on Saturday (Apr 25). According to local rules, the notice should be released at least 72 hours before the sentence is fulfilled.

In January, Indonesia had executed another Brazilian national, Marco Acher, also for drug dealing, sparking a diplomatic crisis between the two countries. The Brazilian ambassador to the country, called back by President Rousseff at the time in an act of protest, has not returned to the Asian country yet.

Indonesia, which resumed executions in 2013 after a five-year moratorium, has 133 death row prisoners, 57 of whom convicted of drug trafficking, two of terrorism, and 74 of other crimes.
