Arrest of Brazil's ex-soccer boss a major change for soccer, says Romário
A former soccer star, Romário was the captain of the Brazilian squad that won the USA 1994 World Cup, and has been one of the fiercest critics of the conduct of CBF officers over the past two decades. 
Senator Romário Farias celebrated Wednesday (May 27) the arrest of the former president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), José Maria Marin, in Switzerland. A former soccer star, Romário was the captain of the Brazilian squad that won the USA 1994 World Cup, and has been one of the fiercest critics of the conduct of CBF officers over the past two decades.
“Police have arrested racketeers and plunderers who only do wrong to soccer, including José Maria Marin. Criminals should go to jail. Well done, FBI. Unfortunately it wasn't us [Brazilian police] who arrested him,” the congressman said commenting on Marin's arrest.
Romário went on to say that the adverse present situation of soccer resulted from the actions of people who are not interested in helping, but in making money, and bluntly referred to the current CBF president, Marco Polo Del Nero, as “criminal, lousy, and wretched”. “He's got lots of money in his offshore accounts,” he said.
In addition to Marin, six senior FIFA officials were arrested on Wednesday morning (May 27) by the police in Zurich on US orders. The 14 people indicted by a New York court on corruption charges include two other Brazilian nationals: José Hawilla, owner of Traffic sports marketing group, and José Margulies, head of Valente Corp. and Somerton.
Agência Brasil tried to contact the CBF, but is still awaiting a response.
