World Health Organization (WHO), together with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued a worldwide epidemiological alert, submitting recommendations to its Member States for proposing diagnostic measures and monitoring cases of Zika virus.

According to the joint statement issued on December 1st, cases of the virus have been recorded in nine Member States of PAHO: Brazil, Chile (Easter Island), Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela.

The statement points out the situation in Brazil, where 18 states have reported the disease and where the connection between the virus and the cases of microcephaly has already been confirmed. Until November 30th 2015, 1,248 cases of microcephaly have been reported in 14 states. Data indicates that the number of cases increased more than twenty times compared with recent years.

PAHO and WHO recommend that countries shall increase surveillance of neurological syndromes and congenital anomalies, and improve prenatal care for pregnant women and newborns in the regions where the virus has spread. In addition, both institutions noted the importance of adopting strategies to control the mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, and organizing campaigns for public communication.

Concerning the treatment for cases of Zika virus infection, the statement points out that there is no effective vaccine against it and that medical advices aim to relieve symptoms, prescribing rest and medicines to reduce the fever. Patients should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
